Delicious Easter Cooking

Easter delights!

Food is an important element in any celebration, but of all the holidays, Easter foods may have the most meaning attached to them. Easter Sunday follows 40 days of fasting for many Lenten observers, so it is fitting that the foods we celebrate with have deep significance for celebrators everywhere across the world. Of course, some of our foods are just for fun!

One of the most symbolic foods that we celebrate with at Easter is the hot cross bun. This fruit-studded sticky bun was symbolic to both Pagans and Christians - Pagans associated the cross cut into the top of the bun with the four seasons and with their goddess of springtime, Eastre, while Christians related the cross to the crucifixion of Jesus. But if symbolism is not your style, these buns are also the optimum place for a perfect lemony glaze, to soak in and give flavor for a tasty treat!

Greek Koulouria, or Easter cookies, are wonderful little butter cookies that help this Eastern European nation celebrate the most important holiday in their religious calendar. The cookies are a traditional treat for the feast on Easter Sunday as a break in the weeks-long fast of lent. While the Greeks used butter to break the fast, Russian Orthodox observers use eggs and heavy creams in the form of rich Easter custards to do the same.

Of course, many of us like to celebrate Easter with a basket full of candied goodies delivered by the Easter Bunny. Chocolate bunny pops and hollow chocolate Easter eggs are quick and easy treats that you can make yourself and add to the Easter Bunny’s gifts. They’re easy to customize to your own taste, so experiment and have some fun!

Almost all celebrations of Easter include the Easter egg in one form or another. The egg has always been symbolic food for both Pagans and Christians, but however you celebrate, it is always a great representation of the renewal of life. Because we love to color eggs in great bunches, there are often too many to eat by the time Easter Sunday afternoon rolls around - rather than letting them go to waste, why not try out our great “egg-cess” recipes to help you use those extra eggs?
